Information on the postpartum period

Postpartum care

In addition to medical and physical examinations of mother and child, postpartum care also includes all questions and concerns that arise when dealing with the newborn and the new life situation. Support from the midwife during breastfeeding is also an important part of the postpartum period.

The midwife can visit you at home up to twice a day from the day of birth until the child is 10 days old. After that, up to the child's 12th week of life, 16 further contacts are possible, which are paid for by the health insurance company. These contacts with your midwife can take place either over the telephone or directly as a postnatal visit. If further visits are necessary due to special circumstances - such as a premature birth - these can also be covered by the health insurance company, provided a corresponding medical certificate is available.

Orphaned parents

Women are also entitled to the care of a midwife in the event of a miscarriage, a medically necessary termination of pregnancy or the birth of a deceased child. In such cases, the midwife can help them to come to terms with what has happened. Couples whose child has died before or after birth are also entitled to midwife assistance in the form of postpartum visits and counseling. Orphaned mothers are also entitled to the statutory maternity protection periods or an appropriate certificate of incapacity for work.
The "Empty Cradle Hanover" can offer support and assistance in this case. The "BVKSG - Bundesverband für Sternenkinder und ihre Familien " also offers support services for families whose child has died during pregnancy, after birth or in early infancy.

These grief counselors from the Hanover region also offer support for grieving parents:

Adoption

Parents can also take advantage of the support of a midwife when adopting a newborn.

Postnatal gymnastics

Pregnancy and childbirth change the mother's body. In a postnatal course, the postnatal processes are actively supported by targeted exercises.

After a normal (spontaneous) birth, it is advisable to start the course around six to eight weeks after the birth. After a caesarean section, the first course can take place eight to twelve weeks after the birth of the child.

You also have the opportunity to attend a postnatal course after a miscarriage or stillbirth. In this case, special protected courses "Postnatal Recovery and Rediscovery" are recommended.

The costs of a postnatal course are covered by health insurance if the course is completed within 9 months of the birth or miscarriage.

Individual instructions are possible under certain conditions and on medical prescription. The team at the Midwife Center will be happy to advise you in more detail on this topic if required.
